Mayo Champions!

Newport NS girls saved their best performance of the year for a bright June afternoon in McHale Park and the County final against Breaffy NS from Ballina.

The girls had a slow start to the first half, but points from Abi Connaughton and Clodagh Conway kept us in touch.

Our girls really came to the fore in the second half and a real team performance helped us to get a foothold in the game. The crucial goal came from the boot of Clodagh Conway with less than 5 minutes to go. A strong defensive display in the final few minutes helped us see the game out. When the whistle blew after a few agonising minutes of injury time, the cheers for the victorious Newport NS rang across the stadium!

Newport NS 1-5 Breaffy NS 1-4.

Our day culminated in Captain Alanna Holmes climbing the steps of McHale Park and lifting the Division 1B County Shield!

Alanna thanked the organisers, referees, coaches Ms Doherty, Mr Browne and Ms Cannon before finishing with three cheers for a tough and skilful Breaffy NS.

What a day, what a year!
