3rd class visit Burrishoole Abbey

On September 21st, 3rd class went on an excursion to Burrishoole Abbey (or Friary as we found out!). In perfect conditions, we walked the 2.4kms along the Greenway to our destination.

After a quick picnic, the children explored the 15th century ruins and learned some of its interesting history; from Norman lords and Dominican monks to occupation by Cromwell’s soldiers in the 1650s and the burial of Fr. Manus Sweeney in 1799. If you meet any of the 3rd class children, don’t forget to ask them why it was a friary and not an abbey!
