Nesting boxes now on TV
Our swift nesting boxes can now be viewed on screen in the school hallway!
Thanks to Lynda and Chris Huxley of Swift Conservation Mayo and Mayo County Council’s Local Agenda 21 grant funding who provided the swift boxes, cameras, speakers and cables, and to Ronan Moran and Moran Electrical who did all the trunking and electrical work, the children will be able to view any swifts or other birds who choose to nest in these custom nesting boxes
The swift population in Ireland has declined by over 40% in the past 10 years alone, so the work being done in Mayo to encourage nesting and breeding is vital for the conservation of the species. Newport National School is delighted to play its part in this important project.
If you’d like to learn more about swifts you can visit the website www.swiftconservation.ie
From May to August we will broadcast the sounds of swifts from speakers located above the nesting boxes, and this will help swifts find their potential new homes.
If we are lucky, swifts will be attracted by the sounds, and make their nests here at the school and the children will get to experience the wonder of watching these amazing birds breed and hatch.
We'll keep you posted!
